Longridge in the Lakes

11th February 2009

Last week could not have been more timely for the Longridge Towers School's year 4 practical Geography Field Trip to the Lake District.  Glaciation is one of the key elements of the GCSE Course work and the students and their teacher battled the wintery weather to study glacial features. Ice and Snow were very much in evidence when they looked at some of the reminders of glaciation, such as a tarn and Derwent Water Ribbon lake, near Keswick.

The snow was not too deep as to prevent them from studying footpath erosion near the jaws of Borrowdale, a renowned a honey pot site in the Lakes. This involved learning about the various types of footpath and investigating differing rates of erosion.

The final part of the visit involved a river in its upper course study at Glenderterra Beck. At this point the group learnt the skills of river measurement and how to identify a range of features including a waterfall, interlocking spurs and a v-shaped valley.
