Jamie Faed - left in 2011
Since finishing Longridge in 2011, I studied a Masters in Systems & Control Engineering at the University of Sheffield, also undertaking a placement year working in industry. Whilst at university, I joined the Engineer’s Rugby Club and also the University Air Squadron (UAS). Through the UAS, I gained 12 hours of flying tuition, had a ski-trip to France, took part in several sporting competitions, visited various RAF stations across the UK, experienced flights in the back of UK military helicopters and transport aircraft and had plenty of great social events. I did this all for free, and even received a small amount of money to cover travelling costs.
After university, I worked in industry for a year while I completed the various steps in the selection process to become an Officer. I attended the Officer and Aircrew Selection Centre (OASC) at RAF Cranwell and in November 2017, I was offered a place in the Royal Air Force as a pilot. I have always wanted to be a pilot but it was the UAS that really grew my military interest and my experiences certainly helped and strengthened my application.
I began Initial Officer Training (IOT) in January 2018, an intensive 6-month course at RAF College Cranwell. It was hard work, but I learnt so much about myself, gained plenty of useful skills and met some amazing people that will be friends for life. I graduated as a Flying Officer in July 2018, and due to a current backlog in the flying training program, will be put ‘on hold’ for roughly a year. I will be working with the Armed Forces Careers Offices (AFCOs) across the north helping drive recruitment and working with school outreach programmes. I will then start my flying training, which will take anywhere from 3-6 years depending on the aircraft I am selected to fly.
If you are interested in joining the RAF, get in touch with your local AFCO who will also answer any questions you may have.
