Good to know

What is the curriculum taught in the Junior Department ?

The curriculum is an enhanced version of the National Curriculum. Between the ages of 4-7, pupils are encouraged to read and write using tried and trusted methods. From the age of 7 there is greater emphasis on separate subjects, and pupils in the Junior Department benefit from extra-curricular opportunities appropriate to their ages.

Is homework set ?

Throughout the Junior Department pupils are expected to read each evening. A short piece of homework is set two or three times a week to the age of 7. From J4 onwards pupils should expect 20 - 30 minutes homework each night according to the published timetable.

How easily will my child settle in ?

Children settle in at Longridge remarkably quickly. Teachers ensure that new pupils are quickly involved. Our small class sizes and friendly atmosphere ensures that everyone feels at home without any undue awkwardness.

How will I be kept informed about my child's progress ?

From J4 - J6 there is a three-weekly Grades system where Grades for Effort and Achievement are recorded on a Grade Card. These cards are brought home and parents are expected to sign them. Class Teachers monitor Grade Cards and contact parents if there are matters of concern. Reports are sent to parents twice a year and Parents' Evenings are held in November and June. Parents are also welcome to contact staff if they wish.

Is there a school bus ?

Our transport network of school buses extends throughout the catchment area. Buses go as far as Cockburnspath in the North, Alnwick and Powburn in the South and Kelso and Greenlaw in the West. Many small towns and villages are served by the bus routes.

When should I register my child ?

In recent years there have regularly been waiting lists for entry into all classes. Early application for entry is recommended.
