The Modern Languages Department offers teaching in French, German and Spanish. All three languages are taught in a carousel system in Forms 1 and 2, giving a wider linguistic experience before making a choice of two languages from Form 3. French and German are currently taught at GCSE and A Level and from September 2016, Spanish will also be available at all levels.
In the MFL department we are committed to enhancing pupils' experience of the culture and people as well as the language of the country studied through educational visits. We have a well established German exchange link with our partner school in Wolfenbüttel and following a successful exchange in 2013, plans for the next exchange are underway. French study visits to Northern France have also proved popular and in October 2015 we will be taking a group of pupils from Forms 1 to 4 to the Chateau d'Ebbingham on the Opal Coast for a tour which will combine French language and cultural activities with WW1 themed excursions. For students of Spanish we plan to continue to consolidate our links with St Michael's School, Madrid as well as running cultural visits to Catalonia.
Any appreciation of languages is fostered through language activity days. Last year we celebrated the European Day of Languages and our next language activity day wll take place in December.
The MFL department offers extra-curricular tuition in both Italian and Latin. Puils also have the option to study Latin up to GCSE.
