Lower Sixth students are invited to apply for the position of prefect. This involves carrying out a range of duties such as monitoring school break times and helping out with the Junior Department during their playtimes. Prefects are ambassadors for the school and are held in high esteem by younger members of the school community.

Senior prefects are appointed in the Upper Sixth and have wider responsibilities within the school. The main posts are Head Girl and Head Boy, and Head and Deputy House Captains for each of the three houses: Home, Jerningham and Stobo. They are appointed through a rigorous application process including a formal interview with the Headmaster, Governors and the Head of Sixth Form (for Head Girl and Boy posts), or senior house staff (for house posts).

The senior prefects are important figures in the school and have a considerable degree of responsibility. They may represent the school at public events, assist in the organisation of occasions such as the Snow Ball, and generally help with the smooth running of the school. They also act as a liaison between senior staff and other students.
