Candidates will need to have a genuine interest in sport and a motivation to learn anatomy, physiology and sports related psychology. Contemporary issues within sport are also studied. There is an advantage to having studied this topic at GCSE, although not essential. There are also close links to some topic areas in biology.
The course will be studied over two years (AS level in the Lower Sixth Form and A2 level in the Upper Sixth Form). There is a coursework element to the A2 qualification. The specification will develop knowledge and skills to help understand the opportunities for and effects of leading a healthy and active lifestyle. There will be an opportunity to build on experiences and to improve personal skills and techniques across a variety of roles in a chosen sport and to improve the candidates personal performance.
Physical Education at A Level allows access to appropriate sports related courses in Higher Education. It provides a sound basis for degrees in Sports Science, Physiotherapy, Teaching and Sports Psychology. It is also a useful way of topping up UCAS points as part of a general application.
