Ian McCreath MBE
Ian McCreath, MBE, has lived in Berwick virtually all his life. He was educated at Spittal Primary School, Warriston Preparatory School and Loretto Senior School in Musselburgh. On leaving school he joined the solicitors’ firm of Sanderson Forster & McCreath (now Sanderson McCreath & Edney) as an articled clerk. He attended the College of Law, Guildford during his articles and qualified as an English Solicitor in 1967 becoming a partner in the firm 1968. He retired as a partner in 2007 and continued as a consultant with the firm for some years after that. He was appointed Her Majesty’s Coroner for North Northumberland in 1979, conducting hundreds of inquests before retiring from this role in 2009. Ian was awarded the MBE for services to the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed in 1997.
Ian married Christine in 1970, and they have three children, all of whom attended Longridge, and they also have nine grandchildren.
Ian was a founder Governor of Longridge Towers School in 1982, and played a very active and important role in its early years. He remained a Governor until 2011 and was Chairman of the Board for the preceding 11 years. Ian says he looks back on his years of service to Longridge with great fondness and pride and will of course continue to take a keen interest in the wellbeing of the School.
Ian has been a keen sportsperson all his life, and was actively involved with Ian Berwick Rugby Club as a player and member it reformed in 1968 and a past President. He has served as Club Champion and Captain of Goswick Golf Club, is a former Chairman of Berwick Male Voice Choir, and a former President of the St. Andrews Club. Ian is currently the President of Foulden Curling Club.
Ian remains active in the local community by playing golf at Goswick, curling at the Border Ice Rink, playing bridge, singing in two choirs and gardening.
We are delighted that Ian has accepted our invitation to become our President following the sad passing of Jim Stobo in August 2023. Ian has been involved in the School since its inception in 1983 and will be available to offer time and support to all those involved at Longridge.
