Ian McCreath MBE

Ian McCreath, MBE
President, Longridge Towers School

Ian McCreath, MBE, has been a lifelong resident of Berwick-upon-Tweed. He received his early education at Spittal Primary School, Warriston Preparatory School, and Loretto Senior School in Musselburgh. After finishing school, Ian joined the solicitors’ firm of Sanderson Forster & McCreath (now Sanderson McCreath & Edney) as an articled clerk. He qualified as an English Solicitor in 1967 after attending the College of Law in Guildford and became a partner in the firm the following year. Ian retired as a partner in 2007, continuing to serve as a consultant for several years.

In 1979, Ian was appointed Her Majesty’s Coroner for North Northumberland, a role in which he conducted hundreds of inquests before retiring in 2009. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the local community, Ian was awarded an MBE in 1997 for his services to the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Ian married Christine in 1970, and together they have three children—all of whom attended Longridge Towers School—and nine grandchildren.

Commitment to Longridge Towers School
A committed and passionate supporter of Longridge Towers School, Ian was one of the founding Governors in 1982 and played a pivotal role in the school’s early development. He served as a Governor until 2011, including 11 years as Chairman of the Board. Ian looks back on his time with Longridge with great pride and fondness and remains deeply involved in the school’s future, offering his continued support and guidance.

Community Engagement & Leadership
Outside of his professional and educational roles, Ian has long been an active member of his local community. A passionate sportsman, he was involved with Berwick Rugby Club from its reformation in 1968, serving as both a player and President. Ian is also a former Captain and Club Champion at Goswick Golf Club, and he has served as Chairman. He is currently the President of Foulden Curling Club.

Ian’s interests remain broad, and he stays active by playing golf, curling at the Border Ice Rink, playing bridge, gardening, and singing in two local choirs.

Our New President
We are honoured to announce that Ian McCreath has accepted our invitation to become the President of Longridge Towers School following the sad passing of Jim Stobo in August 2023. Ian’s long-standing connection to the school, which dates back to its founding, makes him a natural fit for this important role. As President, he is committed to offering his time and support to the school and its community, ensuring its continued success for generations to come.
